eventually goldie seems to decide that she's fine in spite of smelling confusing, and she nudges forward to nuzzle the top of her head against max's hand. max smiles and pets her, glancing towards where daniel's deposited the rest of what she'd brought and then towards the carcass of what was once another one of her toys and laughing. ]

[ since she's close enough now, she rises to her feet to grab the pair of balls from where they've been tossed on the couch and holds it out to be inspected. while she's judging her new toy, max looks back to daniel. ] Your furniture still looks pretty in tact, anyway.
( he's pretty sure it's normal for things growing into their teeth to chew on things. he remembers Emilie complaining bitterly about how Georgie was a biter in the two weeks she was committed to breastfeeding. all things considered it makes sense she jumped ship to formula. less biting and more red wine with dinner, he doesn't even judge her for that one.
he doesn't judge the puppy for it, either. she's just coming into those sharp little needles in her mouth, has to be painful. if slowly tearing apart any toy she has her teeth on for longer than five minutes helps, more power to her. Goldie is gnawing at the toy thoughtfully before Daniel returns and sits on the couch, and then she fumbles over on awkward baby feet to snuffle and lean needily on his shins. as if he wasn't just cuddled up with her on the couch and she's been despondent to be deprived of his company this past minute and a half.
he still pets her obligingly, because after that she's content to wander back towards Max. ) She's no worse than a baby goat, that's for sure. I wonder if I should take her along to meet her exiled sister one of these days.

[ when goldie abruptly abandons her to get pets from her human, max chuckles and adjusts the way she's sitting so that it's more comfortable. as a result, goldie has a comfortable place to flop into her lap when she finds her way back to max, though she leans out of it to try and take hold of the toy and start gnawing at it again. max alternates between petting her and trying to play tug of war with the toy as she looks back up. ]
Could be a good way to get her out of the apartment. [ she knows enough to know that it's good for dogs to have some time outside, and she'd pay cash money for pictures of the puppy and baby goat playing together. ]
( it's a charming sense of loyalty, however short-lived. Daniel does not mind the puppy abandoning him quickly and wandering over to and crawling all over the exciting new company. it's cute enough to him that the dog bothers to check in with him at all, like he's some safe home base to check back with on occasion when her little puppy heart gets nervous. a comfort in her tiny little world. Daniel isn't sure he's ever been a comfort to anybody, besides Alex maybe. Charity? he'd to think so. at least when they were younger, before the vows and rings and his toxic fucking family. bitterness makes the past hard to read.

[ there's a pang of guilt when she remembers joshua, who'd lived his life in the basements of manticore only to end up having to spend most of his time inside even after it was gone. the general public had only proven her right with their reactions, towards him and the rest of the transgenics who couldn't pass for human, but she still wishes things could be different. they'd gotten better since terminal city had been established as a haven for their people - joshua and others like him were not only out in the sunlight for the first time, but with more and more transgenics appearing and needing shelter and protection, they were given a sense of purpose after having been abandoned when they couldn't fulfil manticore's purpose for them. but they also had a target on their backs, and now with the nation's eyes on them, things feel less secure than ever.
but maybe that's better. she honestly doesn't know. she does know she'd rather them all be free.

Maybe invest in sneakers during your next trip out with her. [ does he own sneakers? they admittedly don't go with his usual aesthetic. ] Unless you already did and she destroyed those, too.
